Drunk Driving Facts

If you drive after you have been drinking, there can be serious consequences. You can always designate a driver who has not been drinking or call a taxi. It will cost you a lot of money if you get pulled over and arrested. Not to mention that you also put other people's lives at risk. It is never worth it to drink and drive. You can lose your license, injure yourself or others and go to jail. A night spent in jail for drinking and driving can be traumatizing.

It cost over $132 billion for injuries and crashes caused by drunk drivers. There are over 290,000 people injured each year. Over 10,000 people die in vehicle crashes where alcohol was a factor. Drunk driving laws were established to reduce the amount of alcohol-related crashes each year. However, it is still a problem in every state of the country.

Repeat offenders often have interlock devices installed on their vehicles. Breath analyzers on the interlock devices keep repeat offenders from driving their vehicle. Some insurance companies have exclusion laws that allow them to deny claims for drunk driver injuries. Some states have installed sobriety checkpoints to reduce the number of drunk drivers. Repeat offenders can spend many years in jail.

If they have killed someone, then the penalties are even tougher. If you must go out and drink, make sure you have a plan. Keep in mind that public intoxication is against the law in most states. It is better to have a drink in the privacy of your own home than drinking at a party where you are tempted to have one too many.
